Don't Wear Beige...

Hello Lovebugs!! Hope you're enjoying the change of seasons the way I am! I'm loving the sunshine outside and the warm breeze blowing through my windows. I was out and about yesterday (after tending to those nasty household chores) and treated myself to a mani-pedi. It's been awhile for the pedi (poor girl...I tipped her well for her struggle with my feet) but it got me thinking about the spring and warm weather fashions.

As always, I have difficulty finding what I need in the brick-and-mortar stores. I don't have as much trouble finding clothing that fits my 22/24/26 body anymore. The trouble comes when I see what's available and I get 'The Look'. Some of you mid-lifers may know what I'm talking about. 'The Look' is when sales clerks or other store patrons see you looking at fashions they think are 'too young' for you. This sends many women scurrying out of many a shop feeling shamed and discouraged.
Not me....

It's tough enough being a Big Girl and finding clothing that is stylish and flattering. Shops tend to either dress you in tents or like you're going on the Maury Povich show (and they want something to burst out when the brawlin' starts). I like fun and funky clothes, but not 'ghetto'...and what I mean by that is: Yes, I like inexpensive clothing that is colorful and unusual, but doesn't look like it came from a trunk in a convenience store parking lot. Clothing can be funky without being junky...classy not brassy if you get what I mean?

Now, try finding things that you like and then have someone ask me if I need help buying something for my daughter (or one time, 'granddaughter'). If you've been here before, you know I don't have kids and I already take issue with that line of questioning. My other issue is 'Damn! I'm 49...I'm not dead yet! Why can't I have colorful clothing, too?' Most fashion sites will tell those 'aging' fashionistas that they should be dressing more 'age appropriate'....conservative, classic, calm..... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Why would anyone do that to themselves? Why would you allow society to tell you to wear things that make you blend in with the walls when you know that you were born to be a unique piece of walking, talking art? Getting older means getting bolder and being past all the years of insecurity and doubt. We are much more comfortable in our own skin and know who we are....why let the fashion industry tell you that you should be wearing beige or pastel blue if your favorite colors are bright yellow and red?
"Don't wear beige-It might kill you!" -Sue Kreitzman
You don't have to be a high fashion model, but don't let anyone convince you that you need to blend in with the walls and floors because you are getting older! If you want to change your wardrobe, do it one piece at a time! One scarf, skirt, shirt, necklace, etc can be the start of the real you coming through! It's all about who YOU are and what you want the world to see when they look at you. At any age...at EVERY age...you can wear what you want with no apologies and be as gorgeous and happy as you want to be! Just because you're over 40 doesn't mean you need to send your style and self expression into retirement! Have some FUN! Your style reflects the kind of life you lead...the way you think...the way you feel... What does your wardrobe say about YOU?

So this edition of Mid-Stride Moxie is dedicated 10 sites I've found and to the women who believe you can be stylish, colorful, creative, fun and funky....especially after 40! Visit some of these sites and their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or other pages. Think about what you can do to create the look, feel and style that is all you and create your own fashion rules!

  1. I have one beige t-shirt that I sometimes wear with a pair of dark brown capris. No this is not my go to color. I prefer blues, purples, blacks, turquoise, even green. I also wear flowing skirts, you know those *broom stick* kind that need to be twisted and tied and hung to dry? Yeah, those things. And I LOVE them!

I'll be 60 next February, and I'm a size 22 on my short 5'2" frame ... I wear what I want and don't really care what others think. I guess that is part of how I've changed my mindset this year. You know, going gray, and living for me.

Rock on Lina! Be YOU and to hell with the naysayers!!!
